Have you actually read his script? Was it any good?

I did, but it was a super-long time ago. Maybe 1998 or 1999? At the time, I remember liking it quite a bit, and while watching Superman Returns I remembered thinking I would have preferred the Smith version, at least script-wise (I liked some stuff about Superman Returns, but the story itself was really bad, I thought...of course, Smith's script had Superman either dead or de-powered and wearing a Steel-like power suit through a lot of it, so it might not have been much better than Singer's in the Superman being super department).

Smith's script was, ironically, much more DCU oriented than this DVD. Deadshot briefly appeared as, like, a random assassin Superman stops; Batman speaks at Superman's funeral (and I think there was something about putting whatever superheroes they were allowed to use in the crowd scene for the funeral); and Brainiac and Luthor were the two big bad guys (Doomsday was pretty much just their weapon). And, best of all, L-Ron from JLI was in it, as a henchbot of Brainiac's.

I wonder if DC owns the rights to that, or if Warner Brothers does, or if Smith does or what. Because I bet it would do pretty well if they hired another writer to adapt it into a miniseries or original graphic novel...Calebhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01391759187396994380noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28855039.post-6475505468495030712007-09-25T19:10:00.000-07:002007-09-25T19:10:00.000-07:00Yeah, they seemed to leave out everything meaningf...Yeah, they seemed to leave out everything meaningful about the Death of Superman.

You were supposed to feel the loss through the other characters, but they didn't want to flood the movie with other superheroes or character from the comics most people wouldn't recognize. So all we got was Perry drinking, Jimmy immediately becoming a douchebag, and two random dudes stealing a TV. Not exactly poignant.

Caleb, you mentioned that they should have just animated Kevin Smith's script. Have you actually read his script? Was it any good?

I'm curious because that in-joke was really the only good part of the movie for me.Derekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14326906935557548236noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28855039.post-53065895225253972632007-09-25T06:21:00.000-07:002007-09-25T06:21:00.000-07:00Alan David Doane disagrees with your take. Very creepy that he'd engage in a relationship without revealing such a HUGE piece of his life.

It's like they wanted the relationship so that Lois could mourn, but also wanted to keep the triangle. But you can't have it both ways. It's completely antithetical to Superman's character.
Dude deserves to die, if that's how they're portraying him!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28855039.post-30778197369334850022007-09-24T15:50:00.000-07:002007-09-24T15:50:00.000-07:00Did anyone else think that it's weird Superman tot...Did anyone else think that it's weird Superman totally nailing Lois without telling her he's Clark? With this, plus the Deadbeat Dad movie version, Superman is in for some hard times. He stayed pure and noble during the 90s for crying out loud! Now in the 'aughts he's finally being drawn through the mud.Patrick Chttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04244280974612331889noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28855039.post-19917060534469082542007-09-24T15:30:00.000-07:002007-09-24T15:30:00.000-07:00So Superman returns and totally murders his clone....So Superman returns and totally murders his clone. Except for the clone. Which Superman has totally murdered.

Did you mean to write "and everybody lives happily ever after" in between the two sentences? :D

ALSO I TOTALLY AGREE ABOUT THIS MOVIE!!!

It is SO BAD. =_=;; They took EVERYTHING GOOD AND FUN ABOUT THE DEATH AND RETURN OF SUPERMAN AND KEPT ONLY THE MULLET AND BLACK SUIT! >:|

*growls*

it's also about 70 minutes or less taking out the opening and ending credits XD

Like srsly, when it was done I was like O_O that fast? :O

It's just not the same without Doomsday rampaging across the country fighting Superman all day, or having other heroes lose in the process. :\ And... it'd be so easy to adapt the story to a 2 hour movie. :|

If you didn't want to get into the backstory stuffs (like with Eradicator and Hank Henshaw), Cyborg could be created by Lex (who is unable to completely make a full Superman clone) to take Superman's place and then turn ebil giving Lex the chance to finally be the hero to humanity he thinks he is, and defeat Superman, except he's too powerful to control and has delusions of grandeur. :o

Eradicator could be a fortress program that tries to replace Superman but doesn't "get" the human part of him.

Superboy's a government clone and Steel is Steel. XD

It'd be so much more fun ;-;

I also hate how Clark is such a SMALL part of Superman, when in the original comic story, he was a big part and in fact Lois was grieving for CLARK and not Superman.

:\

The documentary about the death of Superman was rly good tho :OAmi Angelwingshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07263018434610100226noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28855039.post-84987376531430571172007-09-24T12:43:00.000-07:002007-09-24T12:43:00.000-07:00I was very surprised to see this (rated PG-13) fil...I was very surprised to see this (rated PG-13) film in the children's section at Target. They couldn't show any other heroes at the funeral? Very, very disappointed in this film.
