It seems like it would have been worth DC's time to try and fit a JLA/99 story into their continuity somewhere (Maybe near the beginning of McDuffie's run? I think everyone was on the team at that point, at least for a few issues), and to not have flirted with Marvel pricing for a book that was destined to be a harder sell than, say, JLA/Avengers.

Couple quick follow-ups...

DC Comics Presents line: I would imagine these are selling similar to trades and

Ahhhh... It was pretty good, and it made sense for DC to collect pretty much any Ellis stuff they had lying around.

The DCP format's not ideal—I woulda enjoyed reading Jack Cross as a trade or from a back issue-bin more, but I like the cheaper-than-a-trade price point and the not-having-to-look-for-it-in-back-issue-bins format.

Sole Survivor is actually Superman—Soul Survivor and has two stories from Legends of the DCU in it.

Does DC have a more underutilized exclusive artist than Derenick?

I like his work a lot. Does DC have a more underutilized exclusive artist than Derenick? (That one, at least, had George Perez art.) Perhaps it's because I'd never heard of The 99, but the series, rather than seeming like a major cross-company team-up, comes across as The 99's attempting to ride on the JLA's coat-tails, with the added fact of The 99's association with Islam. It's not that I think most comics readers are bigots, but hints of "In this issue, the JLA battles Intolerance!" have an offputting moralistic flavor. Who wants to be lectured to?

Of course, I could be wrong (and the lack of continuity almost certainly plays a role)."O" the Humanatee!https://www.blogger.com/profile/09480155289090114457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28855039.post-84841236367537087592011-03-09T08:56:30.362-08:002011-03-09T08:56:30.362-08:00Oh, and I love the idea of the new DCCP, but as wi...Oh, and I love the idea of the new DCCP, but as with Nick M, the contents haven't grabbed me. As regards JLA/The 99, the obvious non-continuity aspect put it into the vategory of Elseworlds, which I decide whether or not to buy on a case by case basis. The creative time is a plus, but I just wasn't interested in the idea of 99 new heroes closely tied to a religion I don't know much about ... it sounded like Planet DC times five.

And yes, the price was the final nail in the Coffin.Martin Grayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09574149543260175962noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28855039.post-14926713984795599922011-03-09T08:22:28.891-08:002011-03-09T08:22:28.891-08:00I wanted to like the JLA/99 crossover, but after t...I wanted to like the JLA/99 crossover, but after the first issue I dropped it with no plans to ever return. It was just not a good story. Nothing to do with pricing or page count, the story was just not interesting. I like the "Core 5" JL as much as anyone, but this was so out of continuity and out of character for the group that it felt more like a Halloween give-away comic than anything ("All your favorite DC heroes in an exciting story!"). Maybe if the guest characters had some previous DC exposure I'd buy into it a little more, but this book has that feel of "these characters are cool because we say they are." I won't be picking up the trade, the story is awful.Ethanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16273850856695525784noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28855039.post-88014629480690405282011-03-09T08:21:50.539-08:002011-03-09T08:21:50.539-08:00I'm with the other Nick 100% -- that's exa...I'm with the other Nick 100% -- that's exactly how I feel. I like The 99, and I'd love to be reading this book, but the price point has been prohibitive. I'll scoop it in a softcover trade for sure, but how long is it gonna be until that comes out?

As for the DC Presents stuff, I love the concept, but haven't been crazy about the content they've decided to reprint. For example, I'm a huge Aquaman fan, and I'd love to see some of the as-of-now-uncollected stuff like the Shaun McLaughlin run end up in one of these volumes instead of the sorta-Aquaman themed one that they put out recently.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16940496855754297188noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28855039.post-81361996485192131912011-03-09T05:39:25.039-08:002011-03-09T05:39:25.039-08:00In regards to the DC Comics Presents line: I woul...In regards to the DC Comics Presents line: I would imagine these are selling similar to trades and that DC is betting that there will be reorders regularly. It was afflicted with such a huge cast (106 characters is way too many to do justice to in a six-issue miniseries) that it started feeling like issues were just strings of character vignettes stapled together.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28855039.post-60258437263963328432011-03-08T21:27:46.657-08:002011-03-08T21:27:46.657-08:00I would argue the biggest strike against JLA/99 wa...I would argue the biggest strike against JLA/99 was the fact that the first half of the series was $4/22 pages. I like the first 6 issues of The 99, but I wasn't willing to pay that price for the crossover, especially when a trade is almost a certainty.Nicholas Ahlhelmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05651416360488414615noreply@blogger.com
