Thanks for the note Caleb. That reminds me: there was a lengthy article about Cole in the New Yorker about 8 or 9 years ago. I've been meaning to look for it online.
That New Yorker thing was an exquisitely written piece by Art Spiegelman that he later published as a book with Chip Kidd and lots of Jack Cole art called "Forms Stretched to Their Limits." Easily in my top 5 favorite books about comics. Check it out!
